Avenged Sevenfold Biography and Music
Formed in Huntington Beach, California, in 1999, Avenged Sevenfold grew from metalcore beginnings into one of the prominent heavy metal bands of the 21st century. The lineup features vocalist M. Shadows, lead guitarist Synyster Gates, rhythm guitarist Zacky Vengeance, bassist Johnny Christ, and drummer Brooks Wackerman. The band is known for Gates' intricate guitar work, Shadows' forceful vocals, and dramatic live presentation.
Their breakthrough album, City of Evil (2005), went platinum and helped establish the group beyond its early metalcore audience. Other defining releases include Avenged Sevenfold, Nightmare, and Hail to the King. The 2023 album Life Is But a Dream... took a more experimental direction and reached No. 1 on rock charts in multiple countries. Familiar songs such as “Bat Country,” “Afterlife,” “Nightmare,” and “Hail to the King” anchor a catalog that balances melodic hooks with heavy arrangements.
The band's history also includes the loss of founding drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan in 2009. Nightmare became a tribute to Sullivan and a defining chapter in the group's story.
